NEW ANNOUNCER FOR 2013!
POSTED: 2013-02-17 21:33:14
BARONA IS HAPPY TO PRESENT
MIKE ENGLISH
AS OUR NEW ANNOUNCER!!!!

We are all excited to have Mike join our team for the 2013 season!
For those who don't know Mike, he has been around drag racing his whole life. He started going to the races at the Santa Ana Airport in the 1950's and couldn't wait until he was old enough to start driving his own car in the 60's. In 1971 he was crowned Track Champion at the West Orange County Raceway. He began his announcing career in 1973 at OCIR, but still continued to drive with dreams to be a big time racer.
Thankfully for us, he started announcing more regularly in 1995 for the California Hot Rod Reunion. He has announced at every one since! He also
announces for NHRA National Events, Good Guys Heritage Series and the NHRA Heritage Drag Racing Series.
According to Mike, his professional life reached a new high when he accepted the permanent position as Track Announcer at BARONA DRAGSTRIP!
Personally, Mike is happy to proclaim that his better half, Mindy, is the best thing that ever happened to him.
FROM ALL THE FANS, FOLLOWERS, RACERS and CREW - WELCOME MIKE!!!
We are honored to have you and look forward to a great season of awesome racing!!

JOHN GATES REMEMBERED
POSTED: 2008-12-08 12:32:24
The drag-racing community is mourning the death of longtime San Diego County competitor John Gates.
Gates, 62, had a fatal heart attack Nov. 7 while helping his son Eric stage the family's Top Alcohol Funny Car for an exhibition run at the Barona One-Eighth-Mile Drag Strip during the inaugural Arm Drop Drags at the track.

“Because our races are so far from home, we accepted an invitation to run an exhibition at Barona as a great way to close out our year,” said Eric Gates, the car's driver.

“I had finished backing up from my burnout. My dad was behind the car helping line it up when another crewman signaled me to cut the engine and pointed to the back of the car.

“My dad had collapsed. I knew right then what had happened. Dad had a history of heart problems.”

John Gates died in an ambulance en route to Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa.

John Gates, who resided in Santee, had been in drag racing since 1961. He and Eric won two division championships. This year, Eric was named Rookie of the Year and placed third in the final points standings in the Southern California Independent Funny Car Association.

ET FINALS 2008
POSTED: 2008-09-30 06:02:55
Team Barona went to Fallon this week end, they knew we were there.
Our team made up less than 3% of the total particapants and we took home 25% of the hardware. I have said it many times we have the best footbrake races in the division, Gary Ratcliff won the Division ET Finals in his Chevelle. You may know that he broke his S/Pro car at the last race and decided to take the Chevelle up instead. Too bad he didn't have both cars!!
Gary Hairfield will represent Team Barona and the entire division 7 at Pomona during the NHRA Finals. Gary beat the best of the best and the best of the west during Saturdays Race of Champions. Gary missed that last year by just one round and came back to take care of unfinished business. Congratulations to Gary and Gary and everyone who made the long trip for team Barona!!!
As a side note two of our regular racers, Dusty Vedegas from Bronze Star racing won on Bikes and Mark Myashiro won Race of Champions in Pro... All told they knew we were there!!
