It was April the 29th, on another sunny clear day at Barona 1/8th Mile Dragstrip when the 52ed Annual Antique Drags rocked Barona. Cars decades upon decades old showed off their shiny retro paint jobs and made their way up and down the track, showing off how much power was underneath these old bones.
There were stylish cars racing all throughout the day, but the AFX bracket for them came down to Jerry Keller and Mark Lange. Mark's 70 Dart was the faster car, with a 6.70 dial, giving Jerry's 63 Dodge a small headstart on his own 7 second flat dial. Jerry would use it well, getting off the line with a .111 reaction, and finishing with a 7.044 E/T. That'd leave too little room for Mark, who's .242 reaction left him dead off the line, too big a gap for him to possibly take the stripe on, as Jerry races his way to an AFX bracket win.
And as always, the Gambler had it's moment to shine, as event cover boy Paul Wagner and his blue 70 Dart went up against Noel Cuevos and his green 71 Camaro. Noel would start off with an excellent .007 reaction time, leaving Paul behind and playing catch up. And Paul would catch up. His Dart stuck to the track, and fired out of the gate like a bullet from a gun; to the point of going too fast, and putting him at risk of a heavy breakout. Paul would slam on the breaks at the finish line, but not enough to save him. His 7.573 E/T on a 7.67 dial would disqualify him, as Noel takes the bracket win.

The start of April is normally associated with the pleasant scent of springtime, pollen allergies leading to an intense increase in sneezing, and hair-pulling excruciating pranks, but at Barona 1/8th Mile Dragstrip, April 1st was a day of lightning fast cars old and new, intense competition, and all sorts of fun as the NHRA Summit Series began with a weekend of intense racing.
On Saturday the First, we started with the Gambler, where Barry Brown and Pete Wrieden dueled to see who'd bring home some some big cash. Both cars were nearly even in their power, but Pete was a little more eager to launch, as when the amber lights dropped, Pete got a red. Pete launched 44 thousandths of a second too early, giving Barry Brown the Gambler win and pot.
Now, the Summit Series may begin. First, are the Summit Motorcycles. Cathy Silva and Russ Collins Jr. met in the final here, with Cathy's 03 Kawasaki a few seconds slower than Russ' 08 Suzuki. Cathy had a 4 second head start, getting off the line fast with a .084 reaction time.But, Russ Collins rocketed off the line, chasing her down in his 129 MPH speed machine, as Cathy had to speed up.. and crossed the line too early. Cathy got a 9.739 E/T on a 9.76 dial, breaking out and giving Russ the Summit Motorcycle win.
With Motorcycles done, next came the Summit Sportsman, the open category for all sorts of cars. Gary Harfield and Lance Soliday. Both were near equal rivals, only a third of a second separating their dials. Gary got a faster start, with a .051 reaction compared to Lance's .181 one, which he rode to a 7.994 E/T on a 7.96 dial, while Lance went 7.613 on a 7.69, breaking out while trying to catch up. With that, Gary gets the first Summit Sportsman win of 2017.

Next comes the Pro class, where Gary Harfield would go for a second win, dueling Paul Wagner in the final. Paul had the faster car, as Gary's 7.96 dial would give him over a second head start on Paul's 6.70. Gary got a head start off the line, his .013 reaction putting a decent lead over Paul's .027. Gary pushed his car to the finish line, his 7.979 E/T on a 7.96 dial meaning that Paul had to finish faster than a 6.705 on a 6.70 dial, and not go any faster than that dial. He may have done it, too, if he did not let off at the last possible moment, gliding in at a 6.712, and giving Gary the very, very narrow Summit Pro win.

The last event on Saturday was the Summit Super Pro series. Perennial powerhouse Rick Reynolds was ready in the final, and his challenger, Noel Cuevos, was looking to take him down to take an early lead in the Summit Super Pro series. The two were well matched off the line, as Noel had a short lead, with a .074 reaction time compared to Rick's .088 start. However, Noel slowed down as he made his way towards the finish line, as Rick sped faster and faster, undercutting Noel just barely, by getting a 5.949 E/T on a 5.93 dial. Rick Reynolds is still on top of it all.
And that was just Saturday.
Sunday, the racers at Barona were at it again for the second half of this Summit double-header. It was also a day of Imports, as international cars raced along in a preview of the Import Top 10 series coming later this year.
But alongside them the Summit series racers, starting with the Summit Motorcycles, as Cathy Silva tries to get redemption for her Saturday final breakout. She'd be up against Joe Silva and his 1980 Suzuki GS. Joe had the faster bike, so Cathy would launch first. But, Joe won before he even had to step on the gas, as Cathy launched 65 thousandths of a second early, giving Joe the Summit Motorcycle win.
The Summit Sportsman also had a returning finalist, as Gary Harfield was ready to repeat, while Wayne Johnson stood up to the plate to try and stop him. Wayne's 72 Ranchero and it's 9.20 dial was a little slower than Gary's 7.97. However, much like Cathy, Wayne launched off a bit too early. By going off the line 11 thousandths of a second earlier, Wayne giftwrapped the Summit Sportsman bracket win to Gary Harfield, giving him the weekend sweep.
In the Summit Pro, we have Daniel Munoz and his 71 Vega lining up against Ernesto Covurnices's 01 Camaro. Daniel got off the line quite fast, taking an early lead with his .015 reaction time. That, with a 6.806 E/T on a 6.78 dial was enough to beat Ernesto and his 7.361 E/T on a 7.29 dial, giving Daniel the Summit Pro win.

But Daniel was not done yet, as he was also ready to go in the Summit Super Pro bracket, going up against Jorge Couarrubios and his 07 GTO. They were nearly even off the line, with Daniel having a small lead, pushing Jorge to break out, with a 5.892 E/T on a 5.90 dial, breaking out and giving Daniel the second win for the day.

With the Summit off to a hot start, the track is getting a bit of a fever. And that'll break out into a crazy pitch, as Match Race Madness infects the track on the 15th! The Gambler and Test and Tunes will be ran too, so make sure not to miss it! See you there!
The weather has started to cool down, as the specter of Autumn comes closer and closer. It's the end of Summer, as the kids have to start getting ready to go back to school. And with the end of that season comes the finale of the 2016 Division 7 Junior Dragster season, but not before two last go around for these kids, leading to the crowning of the season champions.
We'll start with everything on Saturday, starting with the Jr. Comp bracket, which came down to Justin Ball, who brings this straight up 6.90 dial duel to Peyton Januik. Justin gets off the line first, his .048 reaction time beating Peyton's .152. Peyton would push past it, racing past Justin to be the first one to taste the stripe, but with a 6.879 E/T, Peyton would break out, giving Justin Ball the Jr. Comp bracket for Saturday.
The Jr. Consolation bracket final was between Dylan Oliveira and Andrew Olson. Dylan would get off the line first, his 13 Halfscale dialing up an 8.11 dial, giving him two tenths of a second over Andrew's 7.90. Dylan would get off the line well, but Andrew could not wait, launching 12 thousandths of a second earlier, getting the red light and giving Dylan the win.
And with that, the Junior Dragsters could start racing for points. Group 1 wrapped up with a race between Caden Ball, who was looking to take the season points championship, and Kayslee Price, from Las Vegas, Nevada. It was close off the line, with Caden taking the lead off the line, but he would push that lead, getting a 11.970 E/T on a 12 second dial, breaking out and letting Kayslee take the group 1 win.
Group 2 has a set of Halfscales lined up, as Braiden Chesleigh, trying to make a late season point push for the championship, went up against Tabitha Boardman. This late push by Braiden would need him to take some bracket wins, as he lined up for this nearly heads-up race, but as the yellow lights counted down, Braiden launched nearly a quarter second early, giving Tabitha the Group 2 win.
Also making a late season push was Tyler Smith in Group 3, trying to push his 11 Motivational to the top of the point brackets, but to get the big boost for a win, he'd have to get past Sydney Koppin's 07 Motivational. They'd make it tough, with their 7.991 on a 7.90 dial giving Tyler a mere tenth of a second of wiggle room. Tyler would only need half of that, running a 8.050 E/T on a 8.00 dial, giving him the Group 3 win, and putting him on top of the Group 3 points, with one race tomorrow left to go.
Rounding out Saturday was the oldest of the Juniors with Group 4, as Mark Henry went up against Kaitlyn Savolt's 02 Halfscale. The two would be nearly even off the line, with Kaitlyn having a slim lead. She'd have a hard time to beat, her 7.915 E/T on a 7.90 dial only giving Mark around 15 thousandths to use. But, his 8.224 on a 8.18 would be too much, as Kaitlyn takes the Group 4 win.
With Saturday finished off, there was only one last race to decide the season champs. But the winners on Sunday would also be bringing home their own Wallys, so you know there was going to be no lollygagging when there is a Wally on the line.
Starting off with the Jr. Comp bracket, Madison Leal's 06 Halfscale would meet against Brandon Savolt's 09 Halfscale. Brandon would take the lead off the line, leaving Madison chasing, but Madison ran nearly perfectly. She had a 6.90 dial, but her E/T was 6.899, as Madison broke out by a single thousandth of a second, giving Brandon the win. Brandon was on his way to a pretty busy day.
Group 1 was having one last dramatic showdown, as top points getter Caden Ball lined up against his #2, Gauge Hicks, in a 12.00 dial heads up race. Caden would launch sooner, making a run that Gauge would not beat as he gets a 12.007 on that 12.00 dial, taking the bracket win as the perfect cherry on top of his Group 1 points championship.

The Group 2 final would be between two challengers out of the championship, but still questing for that Wally. Madison Gordon and Ryan Mason would dance with their dual 8.90 dials. Madison would take the green light first, with a 28 thousandths of a second head start over Ryan, but Ryan would catch up, running the faster E/T of a 8.911 on that 8.90 dial. However, Madison's 8.922 was just close enough that her better reaction time could cover her, giving her the Group 2 win off the lights.

After Tyler Smith's push in Group 3, there was only one chance for Nolan Oliveirza to take the points championship. And that was with an earlier exit by Tyler, combined with him winning it all on Sunday. Part 1 of the plan was done, as Tyler was eliminated before the semis, all that was left was Nolan beating Maverick Molloy. Both racers were nearly even, and as Nolan got a 8.113 dial on a 8.09 dial, and Maverick a 8.123 dial on an 8.10 dial, it was all even in the E/Ts, and the race would be won on the tree. Maverick launched with a .049. And Nolan launched with a .046. By a scant 3 thousandths of a second, Nolan took the Group 3 win, the Wally, and the 2016 Barona Junior Dragster Group 3 championship.

Finishing off the season would be one last final in Group 4, as Jr. Comp winner Brandon Savolt was up against Colton Rainey. Colton would get off the line sooner, but his 8.329 E/T on a 7.90 dial left way too much room, as Brandon races in with a 8.010 E/T on a 7.97 dial, taking the Group 4 win and Wally to go with his Jr. Comp win.

With the season finally wrapped up, and the points were all added up, all that's left is the crown the season champs in the Barona Awards ceremony in January.

With the kids all done, it's time for the big boys to come back to the track in a week, with the grand finale of the Summit Series this weekend, with races 7 & 8 this Saturday and Sunday, with race 8 giving out Wallys to all the winners.
Keep an eye out for the leaders going into the weekend: For the Summit Sportsman, David Peutz has the lead, with Larry Brewer right behind him. In the Super Pro, Chandler Meziere is in the lead, with sibling Zach behind him. The Pro series has George Chatterton III up front, with RJ Simrock right behind him. And in the Bikes, watch for Joe Silva, who has Russ Collins Jr. chasing him for the top.
Racing starts Saturday at 4PM, and Sunday at 10AM. It's going to be an exciting weekend, so we hope we'll see you there!
The Crower Cup wrapped up last Saturday at Barona 1/8th Mile Dragstrip. The racers were going late, and the points were wide open, as a strong performance tonight would be what would get you that Crower championship.
The Gambler was settled first, with a duel between long time track veterans "Woody" Wood and Gary Harfield, with a drone flying up in the sky recording the race. Jim had the faster car, dialing in a 6.42 time compared to Gary's 8.01. Both stayed patient at the light, getting off fast, and sped down the track. Gary finished with a 8.024, but it would not be close enough to beat Woody's 6.428, only missing his dial by 8 thousandths of a second, giving Woody the Gambler win.

The Crower cup's championship was wide open. With the winners of the second race not even entering in the first, it was wide open. But as the drivers fell out, as Dan Schrokosch and Wayne Johnson dropped out in the semi-finals, the championship was wrapped up, as Pete Wrieden and his 1957 Bel Air takes the championship and it's Wally.
But there was still one last race to run, the finals, as Pete Wrieden had a race against Rick Reynolds and his 71 Pinto to finish, to turn this last round into a victory lap for the championship. Pete's 57 Bel Air would go first, launching off it's 6.76 dial with a .160 reaction time, as Rick launches a bit over a second later off his 5.48 dial with a .060 reaction time. Pete had a tenth of a second to make up, as he raced down the track, getting a 6.774 E/T. But it would not be enough to make up for that tenth of a second lost at the tree, as Rick's 5.507 E/T on a 5.48 would hold. Rick would win the Crower Cup bracket, but Pete would win the series.
Congratulations to Pete Wrieden, our 2016 Crower Cup champion, as well as all the other racers this weekend! We'll be crowning new champions in two weeks, as on the 20th and 21st we'll have Junior Dragsters race #5 and #6, wrapping up their series, and crowning a new Junior Champ! We'll see you there!
The Summit series struck again over last weekend at Barona 1/8th Mile dragstrip, with the speed demons of San Diego gathering under a cool night on Saturday, and the clear, blazing sky on Sunday, to see who can get a leg up in the Summit series championships.
But before going into the Summit, lets check up on the Gambler. The finals came down to two long time racers, Paul Wagner in his 71 Duster up against Rick Reynold's 71 Pinto. Paul Wagner would get the head start, his 6.79 dial around a half second slower then Rick's 5.38 dial, but the race would be over before Rick got the green light, as Paul left less then one tenth of a second early, fouling out and giving Rick the Gambler win.

With the Gambler, the SoCal Super Street association was here running their own bracket, between a set of El Caminos two decades apart. John Sapone had his 64 El Camino lined up against Valarie Hourmard's 84, and this race was going to be heads up, with both dialing in 6.90 dials. They were very close off the line, with John having a slight edge in reaction time, but only by 8 thousandths of a second. Valarie kept pace, pushing John to run his car as fast as he could, and not give an inch. John finished going 101.95 MPH, less then one MPH faster then Valarie's 101.52, but that would be a fraction too fast, as he finished with an E/T of 6.896, 4 thousandths of a second under his 6.90 dial, and only a hair quicker then Valarie's 6.910 E/T. John was not given much room for error, but due to Valarie's pressure, he had to run hard until the finish, breaking out by a minute fraction of a second. But it was still a breakout, and the pursuing Valarie was given the win. Valarie would be the first female winner of the SoCal Super Street bracket with that run.

And with those two events wrapped up, it's time for the Summit. In the Super Pro bracket, Todd Ferguson's 64 Falcon and Trey Sommer's 56 Chevy met to duel over the bracket win. Todd had the faster car, getting a tiny head start, but Trey was quicker off the line, and his 6.626 E/T on a 6.62 dial was too close for Todd to cut in on.

The Summit Pro bracket came down to "Woody" Wood up against George Chatterton III, with George's 37 Fiat going second with his sub-6 second dial in. But after Woody launched off the line, George could not remain patient, launching off nearly a tenth of a second early, giving Woody the Summit Pro win.

Summit Sportsman had a number of fast cars, but it came down to two in the end: Gary Harfield's Corvette up against Larry Brewer's 63 Chevy. Gary ran a very tight race, a .107 reaction time to go with a 8.123 E/T on a 8.11 dial left .118 seconds of wiggle room for Larry to beat him with. A .146 time off the tree made it impossible, and a run that went too fast chasing that nonexistent extra time broke him out, giving Gary the Summit Sportsman win.

The fun wasn't just for four wheelers, as the Summit Motorcyles had some fun too, as Gary Moore challenged Joe Silva for the bracket win. Joe would be faster off the tree with a .040 dial and he'd stay faster, as Gary struggled to keep his speed, finishing with a 10.649 on a 6.15 dial leaving plenty of room for Joe's 7.422 to fit in perfectly. and get the Motorcycle win.

And that was just Saturday.
Sunday started off earlier, the afternoon sun making the track almost as hot as the cars on it.
Sunday's Super Pro had Trey Sommer's 56 Chevy getting a second shot at victory, this time going up against Rob Hoffman's 79 Camaro. Rob would get the headstart with the faster reaction time, leaving Trey in pursuit. But with Rob running a 6.609 E/T on a 6.59 dial, Trey had no room, and broke out by 5 thousandths of a second, giving Rob the Sunday Super Pro win.

In the Summit Pro, Jimmy Morosan's 71 Cuda was the only thing stopping "Woody" Wood from sweeping the Summit Pro this weekend. He got off to a good start, his .023 reaction time faster then Woody's .057, but Jimmy could not make his dial, running a 6.354 on a 6.28 dial, leaving more then enough room for Woody to sneak in with a 6.494 on a 6.47, giving him the win and the weekend Summit Pro sweep.

The Summit Sportsman came down to a pair of vintage cars, Paul Wagner's 70 Dart up against David Puetz's 68 Firebird. David got off the line quick, his .068 reaction time combined with his 7.633 E/T on a 7.62 dial to give him a pretty hard to beat run. But Paul gambled with his tree and won, launching off the line one thousandth of a second after the green light lit up. With that much of a lead, he had enough room to win with a 7.726 E/T on a 7.66 dial, giving him the Summit Sportsman win.

The wild weekend finished off with one last running of the Summit Motorcycles, as both Russ Collins Jr. and Corey Wilcox brought their Suzuki bikes to the track, with Corey set to go first with his 6.30 dial compared to the 5.63, 120-plus MPH monster Russ was driving. Corey would not get far off the starting line, though, as he left a fifth of a second too early, fouling out and giving Russ the Motorcycle win.

The Summit will return, but next week, the Crower Cup finishes off with Crower Cup Race #3, where the champion will be decided! And with last round's winners being newcomers, it's still a wide open series for so many drivers! Who'll win it all? We'll find out August 6th, starting at 4:00 PM! See you there!

A sickness passed over Barona 1/8th Mile Dragstrip on the 9th of July, and with the track running at a fever pitch, there was only one treatment: Have a full night of Match Race Madness, and take a side of Gambler and AFX, and race hard until morning. Late that Saturday night, Barona was packed with racers looking to settle their personal rivalries in best 2 out of 3 sets, with the winner taking the prize, and a chunk of Crower cash. Manuel "Manny" Gutierrez (Near) and Jim "Woody" Wood (Far) lined up in a Match Race of nicknames. Manny came out on top, winning the series 2-1.
Either way, the Gambler and AFX were run alongside the dueling match race aficionados. The Gambler came first, with a final coming down to Rick Reynolds and his 71 Pinto up against Padro Valadez and his 87 Camaro. Padro would launch first, in the slower car, but Rick would not need to get off the line at all, as Padro launched off 7 thousandths of a second before the green light dropped, giving Rick the bracket win.

When the Match Races are done, and the Gambler has been wrapped up, all that's left is the AFX Challenge. A pair of racers from Ramona would decide this bracket, as David Franklin's 61 Ford lined up against Joel Miner's 65 Dodge. Joel would get the early lead off the line with a .016 R/T, 72 thousandths better then David's .088, but David would nail his dial, getting a 5.909 E/T on a 5.90 dial. But those 72 thousandths would bite him in the hind quarters as it was too big of a lead to make up, when Joel got a 6.663 E/T on a 6.60 dial, as David only made up 54 thousandths on that 72 thousandths lost on the tree, as Joel Miner is the night's AFX Challenge Champion.

The NHRA Summit Series sped into Barona again on June 25th and 26th, for the second 2-race weekend of the Summit Series. Saturday raced late in the night, using the cool of darkness to escape the hot summer sun, but there was plenty of heat on the track to go around.
Before we get into the NHRA Summit action, we'll start with the track regular, The Gambler on Saturday night. The finals came down to young gun Remy Reynolds and the old guard "Woody" Wood. Remy would get the head start, hey 8.63 dial giving her over two seconds of a head start over Woody's 6.54. After Remy launched with a .023 reaction time, Woody had to wait, slowly watching his tree count down as Remy sped in front of him. The wait would be too much, as Woody launched over 3 hundredths of a second before he had the green light, launching early, and giving Remy the Gambler win

Getting into the Summit series, we start with the Summit Super Pro on Saturday night, dominated by Meziere Enterprises dominating, with father Dave Meziere and son Chandler in the final, with other son Zach eliminated in the semi-finals. Both Meziere Enterprise dragsters were equally matched, both dialing in at 6.10 seconds, so it was a dead heat off the starting line. Dave would get off the line first at .014 seconds compared to Chandler's .035, leaving Chandler playing catch up. However, Dave ran a nearly perfect race, getting a 6.104 E/T on his 6.10 dial, giving up only 4 thousandths of a second wiggle room to improve on, while Chandler was already behind 21 thousandths, making victory impossible for the son, who broke out trying, with a 6.092 E/T. It was a powerful race, with both dragsters breaking 130 MPH by the finish line.
The Summit Pro Saturday came down to track regulars Rick Reynolds and Gary Harfield. Gary would be the one with the two second head start, his 7.99 dial lagging behind Rock's 5.37. But this time, as Gary raced ahead, Rick would not jump the gun, getting a respectable .043 start, giving him a time lead over Gary's .051. Both racers would power to the finish, Gary getting very close to his dial, a 7.999 only 9 thousandths off, but Rick was closer, his 5.373 only 3 thousandths off, with his better reaction time, giving him the Summit Pro win.
In the Summit Sportsman, the final came down to a pair of vintage 60s cars, Larry Brewer's 63 Chevy up against David Peutz's 68 Firebird. The two were near matches, David's Firebird being slightly faster, with a 7.63 dial against Larry's 7.72. David would get off the line a bit faster, too, a .085 R/T nearly half that of Larry's .168. He'd carry that small lead to the finish, where his 7.666 E/T was closer to his dial then Larry's 7.763, giving him the Sportsman win.

Saturday finished up with the Summit Motorcycles, as the two wheeled rocket bracket boiled down to Russ Collins Jr and his 08 Suzuki up against Joe Silva's 05 Busa. Joe would get the head start, leaving Russ hanging for a second and a half waiting. But that tension would be too much for Russ, as he bursts off the line 5 hundreths of a second early, giving Joe the Summit Motorcycle win.
And then, under the hot Sunday afternoon sun, we did it all again.
Sunday's Summit Super Pro looked a lot like Saturday's, with a pair of Meziere Enterprise dragsters lined up. This time it'd be the young brothers, Chandler and Zach partaking in a bit of sibling rivalry. Both racers were on their game, both launching off the line in under 2 hundredths of a second. Zach would finish with a 6.261 E/T on a 6.21 dial, but his 5 hundredths of a second of leeway would be too much, as Chandler's 6.158 on a 6.13 dial gave Chandler the win, by a scant few hundredths of a second.
The Summit Pro final came down to RJ Simrock and Trey Sommers. RJ's 70 Nova would launch first by tenth of a second, but Trey had an urge to go too, too big of an urge, as he launched 14 thousandths of a second before the green light dropped, giving RJ the Summit Pro win.

The Sunday Summit Sportsman final was a rematch of Saturday's final, as Davit Peutz's 68 Firebird lined up against Larry Brewer's 63 Chevy once again. This rematch would go a lot like the first race. This time, Larry would get a quicker jump off the line, getting a .058 R/T compared to David's .077, but David would nail his dial, getting a 7.602 on a 7.60 dial, as Larry's 7.793 on a 7.74 could not keep up, giving David Puetz a weekend sweep of the Summit Sportsman.
The last bracket of the weekend, the Sunday Summit Motorcycle's final came down to Gary Moore's 09 Busa against David Collins' 03 Kawasaki. David lined up his his 5.91 dial against Gary's 6.12. David would get off the line first, his .037 reaction beating Gary's .052. He'd carry that to the end, finishing with a 5.975 on a 5.91 compared to Gary's 6.238 on a 6.12, giving David the win.

The Crower Cup returned to Barona late last Saturday night, for the second race of the 3 race series. It was a long night of racing to see who'd win the second round, burning the late night oil at Barona. But the final would not come down to the current points leader, Roy Sommers, or even any of the 28 drivers that partook in the first race. The final would come down to two Crower newcomers: Noel Cuevos, and his 1971 Chevy Camaro and Alex Savcedo and his 1970 Chevy truck. The two were closely matched, with Noel having the slightly faster truck and the slightly faster 6.56 dial against Alex's 6.77. Alex'd get the lead off the starting line, nailing a .042 reaction time compared to Noel's .080, but Noel was shooting out of the gate like a bolt of lightning, building his lead up against Alex, until at the last possible moment, he let off on the gas, crossing the finish line at just over 100 MPH, and with a 6.570 E/T on his 6.56 dial, while Alex came behind him with a 6.843 on a 6.77, giving the second round of the Crower Cup to Noel Cuevos.

With the finals being ran between two newcomers, and lone semifinalist Todd Ferguson improving on his 13-way tie for last place, the Crower championship is still very much up for grabs, with the Crower Cup finale coming on August 6th.
But before then, in two weeks, is the second Summit Series weekend, with a cool night race on Saturday starting at 4PM, and a hot Sunday of speed starting at 10AM. See you there!
Nitro Night hit Barona 1/8th Mile Dragstrip last Saturday to an absolutely amazing crowd. The stands were packed on both sides of the track, with people crowding around the fences to get the closest whiff of the hot nitro action they could get. And when 3 time and defending NHRA Funny Car champ Del Worsham hosts, bringing fellow Funny Car drivers Gary Densham, Paul Lee, and Brandon Welch with him, you know it is going to be one of the hottest tickets around.
It wouldn't be Del Worsham's first time in southern California. His career started racing up in Pamona, and his daughter, Maddy, has been racing Junior Dragsters at Barona for the past 3 years. And today, he was bringing his #1 25 Years Legacy Funny Car to the track.
But he was not the only headliner there. Aside from the Nitro Funny Cars, there were Nostgalia Funny Cars, Altered Dragsters, and Big Tire Racers there to light up the track at Barona.

And when Del Worsham, who's practice run the previous night set a new track speed record by the 330 foot mark, lined up against Brandon Welch, both of whom were among the many drivers signing things for fans before the race, you can taste the hunger in the crowds. And when those 10,000 horsepower monsters erupted, and the sheer force of their engines and exhausts could be felt by the crowd to the point where car alarms 100 feet away were triggered, you know that some of the most intense vehicular power in the world was brought to Barona dragstrip, the crowd erupting with cheers as those monsters cross over a football field's length from a stand still in around two and a half seconds.

It was a big Memorial Day Weekend at Barona Drag Strip, with a weekend full of Junior Dragsters, as well as an intense Night of Nitro on Saturday.
First, on Saturday and Sunday the drag stars of the future sped down Barona's 1/8th Mile.
Starting off in Group 1 on Saturday, the final came down to some sibling rivalry, as Caden and Carlie Ball met in the final, with Caden in the slightly faster dragster, getting a small head start on his 11.94 dial against Carlie's 12.55. Caden would get off the line faster, his .103 R/T beating Carlie's .208, and that'd be the difference as Caden races to a 11.973 E/T against Carlie's 12.575. Carlie was closer to her dial, but Caden beat her by more on the tree.
Jr. Group 2 would wind down to Ethan Cerny and Cy Mitchell, as Ethan lines up on his 8.90 dial against Cy's 2005 Motovational's 9.05. Ethan was slow off the line, taking over a half second to get off the line. He never catches up, as Cy finishes with a 9.179 E/T while Ethan scores a 8.952, giving Cy the Group 2 win

Group 4's finale would be a duel between Derrick Hegwood and Jena Bryant, the two nearly going heads up with Derrick's 7.90 lined up against Jena's 7.93. Both got off the line nearly even, Derrick getting a slight head start with a .034 against Jena's .036, the two staying close, until Jena pulled ahead, but her 7.927 E/T was under her 7.93 dial, breaking out and giving the win to Derrick.
But Derrick was not done yet, also in the final for the Jr. Comp bracket, this time up against Dylan Oliveira, both lined up at a 6.90 dial, racing heads up. Dylan would be the first to cross the line, his 6.936 E/T three thousandths of a second faster then Derrick's, but Derrick got off the line 18 thousandths sooner, as Derrick doubles up.

And on Sunday, we did it all again.
Group 1 on Sunday had Caden Ball returning to the final in order to sweep the weekend, going up against Nicky Jensen. Again, Caden would get a good jump off the line, his .146 R/T less then half that of Nicky's .370, and he'd ride that to a 11.982 E/T, 22 thousandths of a second under their dial, and to a win to sweep the Group 1 weekend.

Group 2's final was down to Paige Smith going up against Dylan Hegwood. Paige's 2006 Halfscale. It'd be another near heads up race, with Paige going first at a 8.95 dial, and Dylan shortly after with a 8.90. Dylan would get off the line first, with a .026 R/T compared to Paige's .091. That'd be the difference, as Dylan's 8.957 E/T was a few more thousandths off then Paige's 9.002 E/T, the reaction time giving Dylan the Group 2 win.

Group 3's final comes down to two racing families, as Nolan Oliveirza, who has siblings who also made the finals that day, lined up against Maddy Worsham, daughter of NHRA Funny Car champ Del Worsham. Maddy had the faster dragster, locked in on a 7.96 dial compared to Nolan's 8.10. Maddy would be closer to her dial, nailing 8 seconds exactly on her E/T compared to Nolan's 8.143, but Nolan got off the line 3 hundredths of a second sooner, giving Nolan the Group 3 bracket win.

Juniors Group 4 would see the other Oliveira, Dylan, make it to the final against Chris Schweers. Dylan would try to repeat his brother's bracket win in his 2013 Halfscale, while Chris counter with his 2008 RPC. Chris dials in an 7.90, and is going to have to wait while Dylan and his 8.05 dial launch first. Dylan gets a lead off the launch, his .020 R/T beating chris's .141 start, but where Dylan gets his win is by getting a nearly perfect E/T: a 8.051 on a 8.05 dial. Chris' 7.925 cannot compete with that, as Dylan takes the second win for the Oliveira's.

Finally, we got the Jr. Comp bracket, with Justin Ball, brother of Group 1 back-to-back winner Caden Ball, going up against Group 2 winner Derrick Hegwood. It'd be a heads up race, both of them tied to a 6.90 dial. Justin gets off the line first, getting a 6 hundredths of a second lead off of Derrick, and while Derrick an a 6.990 E/T compared to Justin's 7.012, it would not be enough, and Justin brings the Jr. Comp championship and trophy to the Balls.
